Contractors License Bond
The Contractors State License Board requires all California contractors to have a $15,000 license bond (or bond equivalent) to maintain licensure. This bond benefits customers and employees who may be financially harmed due to a contractor’s actions.
Bond of Qualifying Individual
A BQI serves as a legal promise of the applicant’s compliance to the relevant provisions of the California Business and Professions Code and the rules and regulations set forth by the California Contractors State License Board of the Department of Consumer Affairs.
100k LLC Employee/Worker Bond
An LLC employee/worker bond serves those employed by an LLC construction business if they are not compensated properly for performed work. The $100,000 LLC employee/worker bond is required for all contractors in California with a business entity registered as an LLC.
General Liability Insurance
Also called business liability insurance, general liability insurance protects your business in the event that someone claims bodily or personal injury, advertising injury, or property damage as a result of your business’s operations, products, or services.
California Contractors License Bond Requirements
Contractor License Bond
Per the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB), all licensed contractors or license applicants must have a $15,000 license bond (or bond equivalent). Section 7071.6 of the California Business & Professions code outlines that this bond protects the general public and ensures contractors follow state laws in their business operations. Surety First simplifies the bonding process by providing fast, online quotes for those seeking a contractor license bond and minimizes involved paperwork so you can easily get a quote and be on your way.
Bond of Qualifying Individual (BQI)
Some contractors may choose (or have no other choice) to have their license qualified by another individual. In this case, some California contractors may be responsible for obtaining a BQI in addition to a contractor license bond to maintain a license.
Per Business and Professions code 7071.9, a BQI is required if a license is qualified by a responsible managing employee (RME) or a responsible managing officer (RMO) that does not own at least 10% of the voting stock of a corporation. Any RME must not be the qualifier for another license and must be a bona fide employee of the business that is employed for at least 32 hours per week, or 80% of the businesses operating hours, whichever is less.
LLC Employee/Worker Bond
In California licensed contractor businesses organized as an LLC must have an LLC employee/worker bond in the event the LLC fails to properly pay wages and fringe benefits to employed or contracted workers at a higher rate than other business entity structures. Prior to January 1st, 2012, California did not allow contractors to form LLCs in the state due to this higher perceived risk. For more information on primary requirements for and components of LLC licenses, refer to the Contractors State License Board website.
